Brain Stem Cell Longevity Gene Discovery

Published 2021-03-10

In a recent study from Weill Cornell Medicine, published in the journal Nature Communications, the study authors discovered a link between brain aging and a novel protein, FOXO3. According to the study, FOXO3 plays a central role in the survival of neural Stem Cells in the brain. The FOXO3 protein appears to prevent neural Stem Cells from dividing until the engraftment environment is optimized. This process appears to be directly linked to the level of oxidative stress present in specific areas of the brain. This stress-adaptive mechanism appears to be related to achieving a longer life span.
