Mechanically Stem Cell Manipulation and Differentiation

Researchers from McGill University have recently published their research in the journal Biomaterials, pertaining to the mechanical manipulation of Stem Cells. In the study, Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) nuclei were mechanically bent to a specific curvature and tension, which appeared to in part determine the differentiation profile. In this fashion, the researchers were able to differentiate MSCs into osteocytes and adipocytes. The authors of the study concluded that a change in nuclear membrane curvature likley presents the most important biophysical aspect of MSC differentiation.
