Need for Global Stem Cell Biobank

Published 2023-10-06

A recent publication in the journal Stem Cell Reports highlighted the need for a Global Stem Cell Biobank which would potentially serve to provide an HLA-compatible donor stem cell match to any recipient. This biobank would be based on the generation of induced Pluripotent Cell lines. According to the study authors, populations of countries with genetically homogenous populations such as the United Kingdom and Japan would require fewer cell lines. Brazil, with a rather heterogenous genetic population is estimated to require approximatley 559 cell lines to provide donor cells to 95% of the population.
