Biological Mechanism of Age-Related Bone Loss Discovery

Published 2023-10-04

Researchers from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine recently published an article in the journal Bone Research about the biological mechanism behind age-related bone loss. While the general process of aberrant differentiation of the bone marrow Skeletal Stem and Progenitor Cells (SSPC) from osteoblasts to adipocytes is known, the mechanism behind this aberrant process was not known. According to the publication, the underlying process is an overactive level of Notch signaling. Blocking the Notch signaling restored the aged mice's ability to produce normal bone, even beyond that of a young mouse.
