HLA Cloaked Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells as Universal Donor Cells

Published 2023-08-01

In a recent publication in the journal Nature Biotechnology, researchers from Sana Biotechnology developed lines of hyopimmune HLA I and II depleted induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSC). These cells were then transplanted into rhesus macaque monkeys where they survived unrestricted and differentiated into various cell lines without signs of an immune response. The broader significance of this discovery would potentially provide a means to use off-the-shelf hypoimmune iPSCs for mass applications.
