Synthetic Human Embryos

Published 2023-06-23

At the recent ISCCR Annual Meeting, researchers from Cambridge University and the California Institute of technology provided abstracts on the apparent successful generation of synthetic human embryos, generated from human pluripotent Stem Cells. The synthetic embryos were not based on oocyte fertilization, but rather represent organized pluripotent Stem Cells at the trophoblast stage. The synthetic embryos were not allowed to remain viable bast 14 days due to legal restrictions placed on human embryonic research. The apparent goal of the generation of synthetic embryos is for the study of human development as well as finding an alternative embryonic Stem Cell source.
