Promising Spinal Cord Injury Response to Autologous Adipose Derived Stem Cells

Published 2024-04-17

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota recently published results in the journal Nature Communications of a Phase 1 Clinical Trial of the use autologous Adipose Derived Stem Cells for patients with Spinal Cord Injuries. Cell were culture expanded to 100M cells and injected intrathecally in 10 patients with American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) grade A or B at the time of injury. The procedure was generally well tolerated without serious adverse events. 7 of the 10 patients showed an improvement in AIS grade, which included increased sensation when tested with pinprick and light touch, increased strength in muscle motor groups, and recovery of voluntary anal contraction.
